Vision Akureyri
Vision Akureyri is a project aimed at renewing central Akureyri to strengthen its role as a center for commerce, culture and town life in general. Akureyri is a town of 16,000 residents located on Iceland's northern coast. It is Iceland's largest town outside of the Reykjavik urban area on the south-west corner.
In order to achieve its goal, the project sponsored an international ideas competition in 2005, seeking ideas on how to renew the town center in Akureyri to stimulate growth. The project was financed by a number of large private businesses with operations in Akureyri and in cooperation with municipal authorities. The competition was held in cooperation with the Association of Icelandic Architects.
An important part of the project was extensive consultation with the general public and stakeholders on the scope of the competition and the issues that the entries must address.
Vision Akureyri is pioneered by Mr. Ragnar Sverrisson, chairman of Akureyri's Retailer Association with the assistance of architect Mr. Logi Mar Einarsson. Alta Consulting Inc. oversees the public consultation process and a number of other project management functions.
